Wine’n & Rollin’

It’s been proven: a moderate amount of wine is good for the body. It has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. But can wine, specifically Ponte wines, mend the cuts and bruises of a Roller Derby queen? One Ponte Wine Club Member thinks so.

Rolling in from Laguna Beach is OC Roller Girl, Amanda Kiley. A Wine Club Member since August of 2006, Amanda, who goes by “Kay” on the rink, comes to Ponte to heal her cuts and mend her bruises with glasses of her two favorite wines, Beverino and Nebbiolo. A former Ice Hockey player, she practices three days a week and has two Roller Derby games a month. “It’s a very physical and brutal sport,” Amanda says. “We have women from 18-52 and every one of us expects lots of bruises.”

Originally from Baltimore, Amanda is also a massage therapist; a trade that also helps heal her body and soul after Derby games. In May, she and her husband, Keegan, plan to move to San Diego where she will begin schooling for Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture. “I very much believe in Holistic Medicine,” she says. “My husband and I want to work in underprivileged areas inside and outside of the U.S. to bring this form of medicine to those who would not be able to afford or not have access to Western Medicine Pharmaceuticals.”

Traveling outside the U.S. is something Amanda is very familiar with. She enjoys visiting places like Romania, Fiji and Antigua, and mentoring women as one of the head trainers for her team. A girl of many hobbies, it was actually one of them that brought her to Ponte in the first place: to celebrate their Scuba Diving certification, Amanda and Keegan spent a day at Ponte. “My activities pretty much describe me to a tee,” says Amanda, who has been described as a “Cali girl with East coast flair.” “Scuba Diving is my peace, Roller Derby is my fire and traveling is my flow. Life is just meant to be enjoyed.”

We hope that you will get the chance to meet Amanda. We’re sure you’ll be inspired by her energetic and resilient personality as a Roller Derby Girl, traveler and healer!
