Our First Trip to Ponte Family Estate

For years, my husband hated wine. During our first five years together, comments like “It smells funny,” “I can’t stand the stuff,” and “I can’t understand why anyone likes that garbage,” were common remarks when the subject of wine came up. This saddened me, as I love and appreciate wine, and I was continually disappointed he’d never share my passion.

Last year, when we decided to get married, we knew we wanted to have a unique, private wedding. Being ocean-lovers and surfers, he asked me if I’d be willing to paddle out on surfboards to have our ceremony in the middle of the ocean. I readily agreed, quietly hesitant, knowing that December waters can be very cold and very choppy.

In exchange for agreeing to his freezing, wet ceremony, I had only one request – that he please come to Temecula with me to go wine tasting.

He begrudgingly agreed, probably dreading the day for weeks in advance.

We visited several wineries on our day-trip together, and we ended up tasting at Ponte prior to our lunch reservation at The Smokehouse. Working our way down the tasting menu, his remarks went from “Not as bad as I thought,” to “That one’s OK,” to “I like this one,” to “Can I have another taste?” We realized that day at Ponte that he did, in fact, like wine – he’d just been tasting the wrong kind for years. Knowing that he now likes sweeter whites, he fell in love with Ponte – particularly the Juliet, Isabel, and Ariana.

Our first trip to Ponte was memorable for both of us – we found we could share a love of wine together, we had a delicious and memorable lunch at The Smokehouse, and we shared a wonderful day of tasting together.

Two months later, after several trips back to Ponte, I was thrilled when he asked if I thought we should join the Wine Club @ Ponte.

I joined 2 minutes later.
