Dreaming of a Wine Christmas, Part 1

Every year I kick off the holiday season by writing a list of all the people in my life I want to get a gift for. It generally includes my family, friends, colleagues and the hostess of each holiday party I will attend. This year I have vowed to gift an item that everyone on my list will enjoy…WINE!

But with so many wines available, how is one to choose? I’ve discovered that Ponte Winery has a wine for everyone.

For: The Friend with Visions of Sugarplums Dancing in her Head

Details: This person is notorious for her sweet tooth. It’s the friend who hosts the annual cookie exchange, and who wows the neighborhood with her over-the-top confectionary talents
Gift: Juliet or Isabel
Why: Like their namesakes, these are sweeter, lighter, delicate wines best enjoyed with friends and family. Juliet is a delightful rose and pairs nicely with any fresh fruit dessert. Isabel is a peachy white that’s divine with a fresh lemon pudding.

For: The Wine Collector

Details: This is the pal you turn to when you want a wine recommendation. His home collection is extensive and every bottle has a story.
Gift: Meritage
Why: Meritage is a masterful blend of five grapes. Combined, they make a delicious, complex yet easy to drink red wine. Your viniferous friend should be able to easily recite which grape varietals are required to make a Meritage, but chances are he has never had one like ours. Upon opening it, he will be treated to a red wine that is rich in flavors of ripe plums and anise.

For: The Entertainer

Details: The have impeccable taste and know how to throw a party. A dinner at their house is not just a meal, it’s an event.
Gift: Zinfandel Port
Why: The Entertainer will love something new to offer their friends. They’ll look forward to serving glasses of this Port instead of coffee with the imported French chocolate mousse they’ve made for dessert. Tell them this wine tastes of crushed blueberries and orange zest and watch their eyes sparkle.

For: The Zinner who needs to switch it up

Details: Your friend loves Zinfandel. Every time you visit, you’re offered Zinfandel. When she gives you wine, it’s, you guessed it, Zinfandel. She named her dog “Zin.”
Gift: Magnum of Zinfandel
Why: If it’s not broken, why fix it?
