Everyone has a “go-to” wine. A wine they consider an old-standby when they’re in a position where they just can’t make a decision on what they want to drink. Whether it’s because the wine list is too darn long, or the mood isn’t striking anything specific, that’s when the old-standby comes into play. For me, that reliable wine is Cabernet Sauvignon.
I was dining in Los Angeles once at a little joint with a long list of wines-by-the-glass options. My server was gracious enough to let me taste a few wines before I committed to a full glass. I tasted the first and wasn’t impressed. I tasted the second and wasn’t feeling that one either. At this point, my server looked a little annoyed – maybe perplexed is the right word. I’m really not super picky when it comes to wine, but I do want to enjoy what I’m drinking (especially when I’m paying the 100% markup price). But, I also didn’t want to send the poor woman back to the bar three more times. And so, I said, “I’ll just have a glass of your Cabernet Sauvignon.” It was perfect. Rich, bold, full bodied and heavy with red fruit flavors. It was just as I knew it would be because I can always rely on a good Cab.
Imagine my delight when I saw that Ponte’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is on sale this month! To that I say, “Bravo!” It’s true: Wine Club Members enjoy a 30% discount on this fine wine all month long. You may or may not remember the long hiatus Cabernet took at Ponte. It was a staple on the wine list, then a period of time when by when it was gone. Not so long ago it came back in the form of one of the finest wines Ponte has ever produced (in my humble opinion). The current vintage is alive with black currant, plum, eucalyptus and oak aromas and flavors. It’s a prime example of a solid, full-bodied red wine. I love Cabernet during the chilly months as it is exceptional with traditional roasts and hearty stews, but this is a wine that transitions beautifully into spring and summer when paired with grilled steaks, burgers, crunchy kale salads and grilled vegetables.
Our 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine to treasure. Be sure to store it well (a cool, dark basement is ideal), especially if you’re stocking up and will be storing the extra bottles…and why wouldn’t you at this price?
