Winter White Sale

My wine tastes go through phases. This time of year, I’m drawn to reds. In my opinion reds are a better choice for heartier, cold weather foods like stews, roasted meats and such. That said, places like southern California don’t get too “wintery.” A bit of rain here and there and then – poof – back to 75 degrees and sunny.  So, I get it, I get why many people would enjoy whites even in these winter months. Of course, some people only drink white wines, too.

The Winter White Sale happening right now at the winery is enough to make me a winter white shopper. Great thing is, I can enjoy them now with, let’s say, a hot chicken pot pie, or later this “winter” when I need a cool, refreshing glass of wine to beat the heat. With the exception of Moscato and Beverino Bianco, all of Ponte’s white wines are 30% off this month for Wine Club Members (10% off for non-Members). If you’ve been a Member for some time, you know that this kind of deep discount doesn’t happen very often so now is the time to stock up! There are some absolutely wonderful whites on the tasting list right now. Here are some of my favorites –

2015 Arneis: This is a mouthwatering treat that bursts with fresh nectarine, peach, apple and rose flavors. It’s medium-bodied, so the delicious notes linger. The last time I visited Ponte, this was my favorite of the six wines that I tasted that day. It makes an impression!

2015 Vermentino – This super-refreshing white has become a Member-favorite. It is lighter in body and crisp with flavor notes of passion fruit, pink grapefruit and apricot. It is an excellent sipping wine and at the same time pairs wonderfully with foods like halibut, pastas, sushi and Asian cuisine.

2015 Chardonnay – Think you don’t like Chardonnay? I didn’t either. Until I tried this wine. This isn’t the over-oaked Chards of days of yore, rather, a lively, full-bodied white wine with tones of hazelnut, cream, pineapple and vanilla, and aromas of tangerine, lychee and mango. A truly exceptional Chardonnay that is wonderful with mild cheeses and cream-based pastas.

2016 Torrontes – Hailing from the desert of Salta in Argentina, Torrontes is a remarkable wine. Medium-bodied and fresh, this wonderful white is smooth with bright notes of orange blossom, Meyer lemon and apricot. I found this to be a fantastic pairing with Mexican food (tostadas, specifically), and it also pairs great with fish, Thai food and sushi.

Also part of the sale is the new 2014 Pecorino wine. This special white wine was introduced in the 2016 December Holiday Reserve shipment, but only to Members of the White Wine Only club. If you missed out, now is the perfect time to try it. This is a full-bodied white with elegant flavors of strawberries, jasmine and honeydew.

Member-favorites 2015 Angry Wife White and 2015 Pinot Grigio round out the full list of wines that are 30% off through January 31st. Ground shipping is just $5 this month with online orders of $100 or more, so now really is the time to re-stock your white wine supply!
