Vacation Libations

Today is Friday, July 20, 2012, or as I like to call it, the first day of my family vacation!  Right now, as you read this, I’m probably packing up last minute things, checking off my “don’t forget” list and giving my garden one last watering before leaving on a jet plane to California, specifically Catalina Island, for 10 whole days.  Like many in this economy, it’s been a heck of a long time since my family and I took a vacation and so, let me tell you, I’ll be letting my hair way down!  Is it bad that I’ve prepared a mental list of what I plan on drinking?

When I land: I’ll surely have a glass of red wine when we arrive home while my parents ogle over their 11 month old grandson.

On the boat to the island: There is a 100% chance I’ll be sipping a Bloody Mary from the ferry’s tiny bar as we set sail across the sea.

All week on the island: Red wine, white wine, rose wine.  All dinners will most definitely be accompanied by wine.

Every day on the beach: Water, water, water

Sometime on the island: My family and I have been vacationing on Catalina ever since I was 9 years old.  Every year I would see grownups on the island wearing these ridiculously large straw hats that one could only get if they ordered a rather scary mixed drink called the Wiki Wacker.  This is the year I order one, too.

On the island, my son’s 1st birthday: I’ll be enjoying a cold glass of milk with my piece of baby’s first birthday cake.

The day we return from the island: I am utterly thrilled to be spending the night at the newly opened Ponte Vineyard Inn with my husband.  We’ll check in, freshen up, and then head down to the Cellar Lounge where I’ll order a Manhattan.  We’ll dine at Bouquet, and then go back to the Lounge for live music and one of the amazing signature cocktails I’ve heard they serve there.

The next day: Because I cannot have Ponte wine shipped to my home in PA (darn laws!), I am in serious need of a Ponte wine crash course, so we will be doing some wine tasting.  I can’t wait to try the Ponte Malbec, Torrontes, Tempranillo, Vermentino and Verncaccia Nera!

Wine Tasting

Last day of vacation: My parents are having a barbeque at their house and I’m sure I’ll be bringing home some wine from my overnight stay at Ponte.  Off the top of my head, I know Super T and Graciela will surely be involved.

Here’s to a week of family, fun and a whole ‘lotta liquids!
