Arrival of 2013 Grapes

I find I am not alone in my restless anticipation of seeing the first grapes of 2013. I miss them and apparently a lot of you do too since I am frequently asked this question: “When will the grapes start appearing on the vines?”

With the arrival of March it won’t be long before our vines begin to show. All grapes will first appear green in color, even the red wine grapes. I warn you not to eat them while still green but patiently wait until the end of July/August when the grapes will soften and change color. This process is called “veraison,” which means changing of the colors. When the grapes finally reach their deep purple hue, you are welcome to taste with wild abandon.

The vines vertically trellised around The Restaurant at Ponte are Tannat grapes. These red wine grapevines are vertically trellised for easy tasting access. With the end of July still months away, why not pass the time by enjoying a bottle (or two) of your favorite Ponte wine?

Psst…2011 Moscato is on the short list so don’t delay. Shop online or visit the winery before this favorite runs out.
